"램지어 교수 주장 그동안의 방대한 학문적 연구 부정하는 것"
"하버드대 조치 없이 침묵하면 암묵적인 동조자가 되는 것"
일본군 위안부를 매춘부라고 주장한 램지어 교수에 대해 거센 비판이 쏟아지고 있는 가운데 김진덕・정경식 재단이 램지어 교수에 대해 징계를 요구하고 나섰다.
샌프란시스코 위안부 기림비 건립을 주도했던 김진덕・정경식 재단(대표 김한일, 이사장 김순란)은 24일 하버드대 로렌스 S. 바카우 총장과 존 F. 매닝 법대 학장 앞으로 램지어 교수의 징계를 요청하는 서한을 보냈다.
재단은 이 서한에서 “램지어 교수가 일본군 위안부를 보수를 잘 받은 매춘부로 묘사한 것은 그동안 제국주의 일본에 대한 잔혹행위에 대한 충분하고 압도적인 기록을 부인하는 것일 뿐만 아니라 방대한 양의 학문적 연구 결과도 부인 하는 것” 이라고 밝혔다.
재단은 이어 “하버드 대학의 교수들을 포함해 주류 학자들의 공통된 의견은 램지어 교수가 제기한 해롭고 불경스러운 수정주의적 거짓에 대해 신속하고 분명하게 비난을 하는 것”이라며 “특히 램지어 교수가 일본 기업인 미쓰비시 그룹의 자금 지원을 받는 것을 고려할 때 이는 더 큰 문제가 될 수 있다”고 적었다.
재단은 또 “전 세계 학문을 선도해 오고 있는 하버드대학의 모토가 진실임을 감안할 때, 램지어 교수가 저지르고 있는 거짓 주장에 대한 하버드대의 비판과 징계 등 그에 상응하는 강력한 조치가 있어야 할 것”이라며 “하버드대가 조치를 취하지 않고 침묵한다면 거짓된 주장을 방치하는 암묵적인 동조자가 될 것”이라고 강조했다.
김진덕・정경식 재단이 발송한 서한에는 미주 한인단체들도 함께 동참했다. 미주한인회장협회와 미주한인회총연합회, 미주총연서남부연합회는 물론 샌프란시스코, 이스트베이, 실리콘밸리, 새크라멘토, 몬트레이 한인회, KOWIN 샌프란시스코 지회 등 북가주 한인단체들도 함께 뜻을 모았다.
한편, 김진덕・정경식 재단은 북가주 지역 한인단체들과 함께 오는 3월 1일 오전 11시 위안부 기림비가 세워져 있는 세이트 메리 스퀘어에서 102주년 3.1절 기념식과 함께 램지어 교수 규탄대회를 개최한다.

Dear President Lawrence S. Bacow and Dean John F. Manning:
On behalf of the Jin Duck and Kyung Sik Kim Foundation and the undersigned leaders of the Korean American Community-as well as all people of good conscience everywhere-I would like to register my very strong condemnation of Prof. J. Mark Ramseyer’s offensive public position on the issue of so-called comfort women. Prof. Ramseyer’s depiction of ‘comfort women’ as willing and well-paid prostitutes denies the overwhelming and incontrovertible body of scholarship that has thoroughly documented the atrocities committed by the imperial Japanese military in its inhumane forcing of women, girls and boys into an organized system of sexual slavery during World War Two.
The undeniable consensus among mainstream scholars everywhere-including Harvard faculty such as Carter J. Eckert(history), Noah R. Feldman(law), Jeannie Suk Gersen(law) and Andrew Gordon(history)-has been the need for swift and unequivocal condemnation of the damaging and disrespectful revisionist falsehoods being propounded by Prof. Ramseyer. The matter under consideration is even more troubling in view of the funding of Prof. Ramseyer’s chair by the Mitsubishi Group.
In consideration of Harvard University’s leading role worldwide as the standard bearer for great scholarship, in combination with its very motto(Veritas/Truth), I urge you to promptly censure Prof. Ramseyer for his harmful propagation of these dangerous and morally reprehensible falsehoods. Failure to do so would constitute tacit endorsement.
