The San Ramon HANSAMO(한사모, President Lee Sun-Ryung, 이선령), which is hosting the Korean Writing and Drawing contest for the second time this year, invited many Korean students in Northern California to participate two days before the application deadline.
In a recent meeting with Bay News Lab, President Lee Sun-Ryung first explained the purpose of the Contest. “The Korean Writing and Drawing Contest, which started last year, is a competition to introduce the Korean alphabet to growing Korean students and instill their identity as Koreans,” Lee said, adding, “Any student living in San Francisco and the Bay Area, as well as Northern California, such as Monterey and Sacramento, can apply.”
President Lee Sun-Ryung said, “In order to inform the students of this purpose, after a lot of discussions at HANSAMO, we decided on a topic that students can think about Korea at least once,” adding, “Although students may find it a little difficult to think about the topics presented this year, I hope that they will have time to think about the beauty of Hangeul and their own identity while participating in the competition.”
The Korean Writing and Drawing Contest hosted by HANSAMO is open to all students in kindergarten (K) through 12th grade who live in Northern California in both writing and drawing. For kindergarten to 6th grade can choose one of the Korean words listed in the Oxford dictionary: Kimchi(김치), Hanbok(한복), Banchan(반찬), Unni(언니), and Noona(누나), or if you are in grades 7~12, you can choose either ‘How did Korean culture influence and impact my life?’ or ‘Why is it important to inherit traditional culture?’
The entry deadline is midnight on March 4. For more information about the 2nd Korean Writing and Drawing Contest, please refer to the HANSAMO website (www.hansamo.org).
President Lee Sun-Ryung explained, “As this is a competition for students from all over Northern California, all the judges were recruited from outside for fair judging, and everyone is worthy of recognition.” HANSAMO will present scholarships to selected students along with awards. Winners will be announced between March 19~25.
Meanwhile, President Lee Sun-Ryung also encouraged many Koreans in Northern California to participate in the HANSAMO Showcase to be held on April 8. President Lee said, “HANSAMO students are sweating beads and practicing for the showcase,” and then “This year, there will be a rich stage with Nanta, Fan dance, Lion Mask Dance, and Pangut where Bunna- twirling(버나돌리기) and Sangmo-twirling(상모돌리기) are held together.”
The HANSAMO performance team performed at the ‘Korean Culture Festival’ hosted by the Korean American Community Center of San Francisco and received great praise from the audience, and recently received the greatest response by being invited to perform together with other ethnic performance teams at the ‘New Year’s Day’ event held at the California Museum in Oakland.
The question about the popularity of HANSAMO performance teams is increasing, President Lee said, “Recently, Korean organizations and external events have been inviting more and more HANSAMO performance team. I feel it indirectly through this,” she said, adding, “The only regret is that the members are all students, so they have to combine their studies, which means they can’t attend all the invitational events because their schedules don’t match.”
The ‘HANSAMO Showcase,’ where you can enjoy the performance of the HANSAMO performance team, will be held at 4 p.m. on April 8 at the Dougherty Valley Performing Art Center(10550 Albion Rd, San Ramon, CA 94582). In the showcase, not only the stage of the performance team will be held, but also the award ceremony of the Korean writing and Drawing contest, as well as the exhibition of the winning works and the scholarship delivery ceremony.
